“…Okay, that seems like enough supplies to last us a few days…what do you think, bud?” Hiccup’s voice was quiet as he turned to face Toothless, who simply let out a small grumble in response. The Night Fury’s gaze flickered to you for a moment, before settling back on the boy, watching him with trusting eyes.

You were currently sat outside of Hiccup’s home, perched on the steps to his house as you watched Hiccup prepare for the trip. The trip back to your island.

“…Hiccup? Do you need any help? I feel a little useless just…sitting here,” you asked, rising to your feet and dusting yourself off, before walking over to the dragon rider. He smiled in response, shaking his head.

“No, actually, _____, I think we’re practically done. That feel okay, Toothless? Not too heavy for you?”

The Night Fury growled in response shaking himself a little. The items Hiccup had packed and stored into the pouches on the sides of the dragon’s saddle jingled around a bit; showing that he was fine. Hiccup smiled, before glancing at you.

“Seems like we’re ready to go.”

You nodded, biting your lip slightly. Initially, you thought the whole idea of returning to your island had been a good one, but now…you weren’t so sure…

“Hey, it’ll be fine. I’m with you, remember? You’re not going through this alone,” Hiccup reminded you. You nodded, his confident tone doing wonders for you. You could do this. With Hiccup encouraging you, you could take this step. You could finally have closure.

No matter how painful it was going to be.

“…Yeah. Thank you, Hiccup. Toothless. You’ve…both been so kind to me…I don’t know how to thank you enough…”

“Well, don’t thank us yet! We have to get you to your island safe and sound first!” he joked, scratching the back of his head as he let out a laugh. You joined in; his carefree laughter lightening your spirit.

“…We should probably get going soon. My dad won’t be happy when he finds out about this…neither will the others…”

“Yeah…of course…I’m sure the other dragon riders would want to help, right?”

“Yeah, we usually work as a team. But for this, it’ll be too risky. Going solo is best,” Hiccup murmured as he climbed into Toothless’ saddle. He motioned for you to follow, and you quickly slid into position behind him, securing your arms around his waist.

“It’s West, right?” Hiccup asked, tilting his head in the direction you were planning on flying, “it might take us longer than expected. We’ll be flying into heavy wind. It may get dangerous, too.”

“C’mon, dragon rider, don’t tell me you’re chickening out?” you taunted lightly, causing him to jostle in the saddle, making you laugh a little.

“Not likely…alright, bud…up we go…”

Toothless let out a roar, before spreading his magnificent, black leathery wings, and taking to the skies.

Just as Hiccup had said, the wind was fierce. You couldn’t help but curse Thor as the harsh weather whipped at your skin; leaving you feeling sore and weak.

“…Maybe you should build a helmet next, Hiccup,” you called out to the dragon rider who was currently staring to his left, “this wind is making my face hurt…”

“Duly noted,” he responded, taking a mental note in his head. Helmets would probably be a good idea, especially with Winter coming up…

You glanced in the direction Hiccup was looking, narrowing your eyes slightly to try and see better.

Of course, all thoughts of seeing anything blew away as a loud clap of thunder rumbled around you. You jolted as the noise boomed around you, unconsciously tightening your arms around Hiccup’s waist.

“Hiccup…Thor’s getting angry…I don’t think we should be flying in this…” you winced as a freezing cold raindrop hit your cheek.

“Yeah, I agree. As soon as I see an island I’ll land,” he said, urging Toothless to try and more swifter. With a growl, the dragon flapped his wings, propelling them forwards through the clouds.

“…There,” Hiccup called out after a while, pointing down towards a faint shape in the distance, “we’ll land there and wait out the storm…”

“Okay…but we won’t need to fly anymore even after the storm,” you whispered, your eyes locked on the island that you were fast approaching.

“Why?”

“Because…that’s my island…”

Hiccup’s head shot towards the island, and he stared at it.

“…Well, that took less time than expected,” he said to himself.

“I guess our islands weren’t that far apart,” your eyes stayed locked on your island, refusing to even take in the sky lighting up from the lightning.

“…It’ll be okay, _____…I’m going to land now, okay? Right on the edge of the island…”

You felt pressure against your fingertips, and your eyes darted downwards, staring at your hand. Hiccup had reached around and grabbed your hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

With a gulp, you squeezed back, silently telling him that it was okay to do so.

“Okay, bud…down we go…” Hiccup leaned down to whisper to Toothless, and the Night Fury responded with a small rumble, before taking you lower; circling the island a few times before diving towards the most thickly forested area of the island. He narrowly avoided the trees as he landed; tucking his wings against his body as he made his way to the ground. He skidded to a stop, shaking his head slightly as he growled.

“Well, that wasn’t your smoothest landing, bud, but given the circumstances, it was okay. Good job,” Hiccup said as he slid from Toothless’ saddle, dragging you along. He hadn’t realised yet, but your hands were still entwined.

Of course, your eyes didn’t know where to look. Your mind was in shambles and was reeling from panic. What if someone saw you? What were you going to do? How were you going to explain this?

“…_____, calm down,” Hiccup’s calm voice reached your ears, and your eyes shot up to stare him in the face.

“H-How can you be so calm, Hiccup? I don’t know…I mean, I don’t-”

You paused as you felt Hiccup pull you forwards, wrapping his arms around you in a tight hug. You winced as you heard the rumble of thunder around you, and the cold rain started to pelt against your unprotected skin.

“…Because I have you here with me,” he murmured softly, and you almost didn’t pick it up due to the loud rainfall.

“H-Huh?” you whispered, staring up at his now soaked face. His hair stuck to his forehead and hung limp in his eyes, but those friendly olive green irises still stared straight at you, not looking away.

“I’m calm because I have a dear friend with me. As long as we have each other, we can conquer anything…or at least, I’d like to think that we can,” he continued, scratching the back of his head as he smiled.

You couldn’t help but stare as he smiled at you. His lips - rainwater dripping from them - looked so incredibly soft to the touch, and you had to resist the urge to touch them. Why was probably for the best. Your mind was coming up with all sorts of crazy things…

“…Heh,” you let out a small chuckle, trying to distract yourself, “you sound like some kind of tragic hero, Hiccup…”

“Oh yeah? Well, I guess the tragic part is pretty accurate; we both look pretty tragic and pathetic right about now…we’re soaked to the bone…why don’t you say we find some shelter and wait out the storm before making our next move?”

“…Sounds good,” you nodded, taking your opportunity to pull away from him, shaking out your hair.

“I know a good place to take shelter. It’s not far from here,” you murmured, taking a look around. You knew this place well; it wasn’t far from the lake you and Nightshade used to sit by. And this area was full of large, over-hanging trees and alcoves made from stone. You’d find something soon enough.

“Lead the way…c’mon, Toothless,” Hiccup called out to his Night Fury, who in response, bounded over to you both, rumbling happily. He looked eager to get out of the rain.

“Okay…follow me,” you said, before beginning to walk further into the forest.

You sighed, wringing your hair out for the umpteenth time as you slouched in your spot in the small cave. Most of the spots you had found, although good places to wait out the storm, had been too small for Toothless. You’d been forced to all cram into one small cave, which didn’t leave you with that much protection from the horrid cold of the storm.

Toothless was curled up in front of you and Hiccup; his body thankfully shielding you from most of the storm. The rain still hit your face however, and you found yourself constantly wiping the water away from your eyes. You slouched further back against the edge of the cave, hoping to find a spot that offered you at least a little warmth. The cold was beginning to make you shiver terribly.

“Cold?” Hiccup’s voice was tired, yet still it held the same kindness it always did. You nodded, rubbing your hands together.

“Yeah…we probably should’ve stacked up on warmer clothing or something…”

“Well, I would suggest a fire, but the cave’s too open and the wind’s too strong for that…” he sighed, rubbing his eyes as rainwater pelted at his face. Toothless watched quietly from his spot in front of you, his entire body glistening with water. A deep rumble echoed in his chest, showing his dissatisfaction at the situation.

“…C’mere,_____.”

You glanced at Hiccup, to him staring at you.

“Huh? W-Why?”

“Your teeth are chattering. You need warmth.”

You froze, only then realising that your teeth, were indeed chattering. Your whole body was trembling, and you were beginning to lose the feeling in your fingers due to the cold.

Without another word, you moved closer to Hiccup, inhaling sharply as he pulled you close; his arm wrapping around your waist and his cheek resting on the top of your head. You hesitantly wrapped your arms around him, instantly feeling your body heating up as Hiccup’s warmth was shared with you.

“…Thanks, Hiccup,” you whispered, the warmth beginning to make you feel drowsy.

“…Don’t mention it,” he replied, his voice thick with exhaustion also. Before the two of you knew it, you had slipped into unconsciousness in each other’s arms.

A faint rumble was what awoke you from your slumber. Your eyes slid open, and you found yourself staring into the face of Toothless. His pale green eyes stared at you curiously, and you blinked slowly, starting to wake yourself up. With a small yawn, you took your eyes off the dragon, taking in your surroundings.

Well, the rain had stopped, at least. From what you could see, though, there were still dark clouds in the sky; looks like Thor had stopped his rampage yet. The cave you were sat in was now a lot warmer, and although the ceiling was still dripping with water, it was a lot more inviting.

You glanced back at Toothless, only to find him staring at something by your side. With another yawn, you glanced in the direction he was looking.

Your eyes widened as you remembered how you had fallen asleep.

Hiccup leaned against you, his head leaning against your shoulder and his chest rising and falling slowly with his heavy breathing as sleep still wrapped around him. His features were calm, soft; his confidence that he usually wore on his face had all but vanished from his body, leaving him with an expression that made him look…somewhat vulnerable.

“…I’ll never understand what’s making me…” your words trailed off as he twitched, signalling that he was waking. With a small groan, his eyes fluttered open, tiredly taking in the world around him.

“…Hello,” you greeted quietly, watching as his eyes widened slightly, before he sat up, rubbing his cheek that had been pressed against your shoulder.

“…Hey,” you replied, his voice husky due to sleep, “sorry, I guess I fell asleep, huh?”

“We both did.”

There was a moment of silence, before he pulled away, stretching. The loss of contact made you frown slightly, but you held back your protests.

“Looks like the storm hasn’t fully passed yet. What do you want to do?”

“…I think we should get this over with…if that means doing it now, then…I’ll do it now…” you sighed, rubbing your eyes.

You wanted to end this. You needed to have this closure. Just one look. Just one look at the village. Just one look at your dragon. That’s all you’d need, and then you’d finally be able to move on.

“…I need to see Nightshade, after all,” you said, a sad smile on your face. Hiccup gave you a confused look.

“But…I thought that-”

“My village saw dragon’s as an omen, remember? It was a taboo to go near them. Can you imagine the uproar if one of the villagers touched one, even a…dead one? They wouldn’t have moved him…I don’t think…they would’ve just…left the area alone, and let nature takes it’s course…”

“…I see. So you want to go and see him…that sounds like a good idea,” Hiccup sent you a smile, “I’m sure he would like that.”

“…Yeah,” you whispered, looking up at the rumbling clouds, “I’m sure he would…”
I don't like this chapter. I've edited it so many times that after a while I kind of stopped reading what I was writing. But hey, at least it's an update, huh?

Don't worry, things start getting intense in the next chapter hehehehe
